purposeful things to do as a stay-at-home mom, mom gardening

Being a stay-at-home mom can be a very rewarding job. But outside of the mom duties, it can be lonely and boring if you donโ€™t know how to spend your free time wisely.

As you can tell from my other posts, I really like to clean and make homemaking content for this blog and social media. But other than that, I know itโ€™s important to have other hobbies to fill my time and make it purposeful for the home.

Here in this post, I share some tips on purposeful things you can do as a stay-at-home mom!

Purposeful Things To Do As A Stay-At-Home Mom

Start journaling

Writing down your thoughts in a journal is great to do for anyone, but I think itโ€™s even more helpful for stay-at-home moms like us.

Here are some ideas on topics you can write about when you start journaling:

  • Jot down your feelings
  • New things youโ€™ve learned
  • What you did that day
  • New habits you want to form
  • Bible verses you want to remember

There are lots of other topics you could journal about. You could even start a blog like I did!

Start cooking

Most of us moms already know how to cook. But thereโ€™s always room to learn new skills and recipes.

Homemade meals are much healthier for you a lot of the time AND you can save money!

Now if you donโ€™t know how to cook, you should start learning for yourself and your family. There is so much satisfaction in knowing you yourself prepared food for your family.

Learn some new dishes from Pinterest (thatโ€™s where I find new recipes!) in your free time and cook them with love for your family. Cooking is one of the best things you can do as a stay-at-home mom.

Start gardening

If you are home a lot and need to do something to pass the time, then starting a garden is just for you! You can even grow plants whether youโ€™re in a house or an apartment if you have a porch/patio.

You donโ€™t need to have a big yard to be successful gardening. Just start small by learning to take care of one or two plants.

We like planting new flowers every year to make our yard colorful and pretty to admire in the Spring and Summer. We have not tried growing any vegetables yet, but we might plant some this year and you could too!

If you want to start gardening, here are some tips for beginners:

  • Choose plants that are easy to maintain and are hard to kill. These types of plants are aloe, a money tree, snake plants, lilies and more!
  • Just use regular garden soil that is easy to find in lots of stores. Once you are a more advanced gardener, you can branch out to other types of soils and manure from plant nurseries.
  • Donโ€™t over water! This is a common mistake beginner plant owners make, and you think youโ€™re helping your plants, but excess water will actually kill them.
  • Give your plants plenty of sunlight. Like we learned early in school, plants make their food with plenty of water, sunlight and carbon dioxide.

Start reading

Reading a good book is not only a great pass time but it will give you great knowledge and keep your mind sharp. Especially in todayโ€™s world of technology and screen time.

I am not a huge reader, but finding a good book to immerse yourself in can be a great new habit to start if youโ€™re looking for one.

Here are some great self-improvement book suggestions!

Start doing yoga

Spending your free time improving your wellbeing is one of the best things you can do as a stay-at-home mom.

I know itโ€™s easy to just sit, relax and scroll our phones when we have down time. Then we just jump from one app to another.

In doing this, we are just pinging our mind from here to there and then by the end of the day our brain is exhausted and we complain of headaches.

Maybe try something new and practice personal growth as a stay-at-home mom by learning yoga!

You can learn beginner yoga poses from YouTube videos or maybe download a Yoga app.

In conclusion

Be creative. There are plenty of fun things we can do as a stay-at-home mom. Your feelings of idleness are just an opportunity for you to start something new.

Donโ€™t ignore that feeling! Filling your free time as a mom with purposeful hobbies will better yourself and can benefit your family too. Filling your cup first allows you to be your best self for your spouse and children.
